Results <strong>and</strong> Discussion<br />

Background<br />

This section focuses on <strong>the</strong> quantitative <strong>and</strong> qualitative dimensions of participants’<br />

views, feelings <strong>and</strong> attitudes towards tourism <strong>and</strong> tourism development<br />

on Lake Superior’s north shore <strong>and</strong> isl<strong>and</strong>s, collected during <strong>the</strong><br />

forums. Three forms of reporting follow:<br />

a description of <strong>the</strong> demographic <strong>and</strong> social characteristics of participants;<br />

a discussion based upon <strong>the</strong> responses to <strong>the</strong> attitudinal questions; <strong>and</strong><br />

a discussion of <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>mes <strong>and</strong> issues voiced by participants during <strong>the</strong><br />

forums.<br />

Demographic <strong>and</strong> social characteristics of <strong>the</strong> participants<br />

There were 95 participants at <strong>the</strong> meetings, 92 of whom completed <strong>the</strong> survey.<br />

As Table 5.1 shows, <strong>the</strong> majority were male (72%). Fur<strong>the</strong>rmore, most of<br />

<strong>the</strong> respondents were 35 years or older with more than half between <strong>the</strong> ages<br />
