9 U14/2309 Artifact Find Spot This site was recorded by Foster during the 1984 NZHPT survey of Tauranga District. The site represents the location of an artifact find spot comprising an adze. The adze was found by the owner while digging for a water trough on sloping ground just north of a swamp. No photo or sketch of the adze is available, however, Foster describes the adze as a 2B; a type commonly found on late prehistoric Maori sites. The find spot is located on a tongue of raised land extending across SH 2. The distal end of the ridge on the northern side of SH 2 has recently been quarried to accommodate the new Domain Road SH 2 interchange, however, unmodified areas on the northern side of the recent cut may contain further subsurface archaeological features and or artefacts in the overlying volcanic loam soils and within the surrounding wetlands. The proposed construction corridor in this area is located within the existing modified road reserve and it is unlikely that unrecorded archaeology will be affected by the current proposal. U14/2903 & 2904 Midden These two midden sites are located approximately 300m north of the Mangatawa Lane SH 2 intersection and are located within a similar environment to U14/1708 & 1709 on the north bank of the same paleochannel within the Papamoa Dune Plain. They are close to an old track that once extended from Karikari point, on the eastern side of Rangataua Bay, to Otira on Omanu Beach 7 and may represent a halfway point between the coast and Karikari Pa. Mangatawa Lane follows the old track alignment south of SH 2 but the northern alignment is no longer visible. The two middens are at least 250m north of the proposed construction corridor. 7 ML 4868
10 Hungahunga & Toroa A further tongue of raised Papamoa ignimbrite extends across the proposed construction corridor in the vicinity of the Kairua Road SH2 intersection. The place names of Hungahunga and Toroa are provided on survey plan ML 8133 which may also indicate further settlement sites and associated archaeological remains in this area. The only section of the ridge affected by the proposed construction corridor is located within extensively modified railway reserve land on the south-western side of SH 2. Figure 9.
