NZ Transport Agency and Tauranga City Council Mangatawa Drain Flood Bypass and TEM Stormwater AEE Both of these waterways provide habitat for a small range of native fish (Mangatawa: n = 4; Maranui: n = 3) and common macroinvertebrates. No rare or especially sensitive species were recorded. Previous records of native fish indicated that there are six diadromous (migrating between fresh and saltwater) species within the upper catchment of the Mangatawa drain, suggesting that the Mangatawa drain is important as a migration route. Longfin eel (Anguilla dieffenbachii) were recorded from a tributary draining the Papamoa Hills in 2001. This species is diadromous and is considered to be ‘in decline’ on a national basis (Hitchmough et al., 2007). All of the native species recorded within the Maranui waterway are also considered to be diadromous; however these species are considered ‘not threatened’ by the Department of Conservation (Hitchmough et al., 2007).
