would depend on the size of the scheme and level of impact. Small<br />

scheme should still have regard to possibilities to incorporate costeffective<br />

measures to minimise noise and vibration.<br />

4B.39 Methods of scheme assessment will need to evolve, reflecting changes at<br />

the European level, and UK national policy towards ambient noise, and<br />

responding to improvements in the available technologies.<br />

Understandable information needs to be conveyed to the public. <strong>Ambient</strong><br />

noise mapping will be useful, but other information may also be required.<br />

<strong>Noise</strong> needs to be part of multi-criteria assessment which is, where<br />

necessary, multi-modal.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Mayor will urge proposers of major rail schemes and light transit<br />

projects to minimise any adverse impacts of noise and vibration, using the<br />

best available cost-effective technologies. <strong>The</strong> noise and vibration impacts<br />

of schemes should be assessed along with other criteria, and<br />

understandable information conveyed in public consultation as proposals<br />

are brought forward.
