neutral, but could favour richer areas - for example, if it were cheaper and<br />

easier to reduce noise in suburban or ex-urban areas with more space for<br />

barriers, more scope for further traffic calming, etc., than in denser urban<br />

areas. Studies for monetary valuation need to characterise noise exposure<br />

better than in much previous work. For example, if external noise<br />

indicators are used, any systematic variations in noise reduction provided<br />

by the building fabric need to be accounted for. <strong>Noise</strong> valuation based on<br />

property price differentials is likely to be highly problematic in a complex<br />

and stressed housing market such as <strong>London</strong>.<br />
