Major airport Defined by Environmental <strong>Noise</strong> Directive 2002/49/EC as<br />

a civil airport with more than 50,000 aircraft movements (a movement<br />

being a take-off or a landing) a year.<br />

Major railway Defined by Environmental <strong>Noise</strong> Directive 2002/94/EC as<br />

a railway with more than 30,000 train passages a year.<br />

Major road Defined by the EU Environmental <strong>Noise</strong> Directive as a road<br />

with more than 3 million vehicle passages a year.<br />

Mixed Mode A form of runway use at Heathrow when both main parallel<br />

runways are used simultaneously for landings and take offs (both in the<br />

same direction, of course). Alternation (see above) may be suspended<br />

exceptionally, for example, when unusual weather conditions mean that<br />

the holding stacks have become full.<br />

Night time Generally taken as the period from 2300 to 0700 hours,<br />

unless otherwise specified.<br />

European Directive on Integrated Pollution Prevention and Control.<br />

powers to declare <strong>Noise</strong> Abatement Zones. <strong>The</strong>se provided local<br />

authorities with a relatively sophisticated means of controlling and, where<br />
