<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> moving car or cars, and said space or passage-way shall always<br />

be kept free from obstructions.<br />

Kule 48. No miner or laborer shall run cars out <strong>of</strong> any breast or<br />

chamber or on any gravity road unless he is a suitable person, employed<br />

by <strong>the</strong> mine foreman for that particular work; and no person<br />

shall be emploj-ed by any mine foreman to perform such work,<br />

under <strong>the</strong> age <strong>of</strong> sixteen (16) years.<br />

Rule 49. Safety holes shall be made at <strong>the</strong> bottom <strong>of</strong> all slopes<br />

and planes and be kept free from obstruction to enable <strong>the</strong> footman<br />

to escape readily in case <strong>of</strong> danger.<br />

Rule 50. Safety blocks or some o<strong>the</strong>r device for <strong>the</strong> purpose <strong>of</strong><br />

preventing cars from falling into a shaft or running away on a slope<br />

or plane, shall be placed at or near <strong>the</strong> head <strong>of</strong> every shaft, slope or<br />

plane, and said safety blocks or o<strong>the</strong>r device must be maintained in<br />

good working order.<br />

Rule 51. No person shall travel on any gravity train while cars<br />

are being hoisted or lowered <strong>the</strong>reon. Whenever ten (10) persons arrive<br />

at <strong>the</strong> bottom or top <strong>of</strong> any plane on which it is necessary lor<br />

men to travel, traffic <strong>the</strong>reon shall be suspended for a period <strong>of</strong> time<br />

long enough to permit <strong>the</strong>m to reach <strong>the</strong> top or bottom <strong>of</strong> said plane.<br />

Rule 52. No mine cars shall be used in any mine unless <strong>the</strong><br />

bumpers are <strong>of</strong> sufficient length and width to keep <strong>the</strong> bodies <strong>of</strong> said<br />

cars separated by not less than twelve (12) inches when <strong>the</strong> cars<br />

stand on a straight level road and <strong>the</strong> bumpers touch each o<strong>the</strong>r.<br />

Rule 53. It shall be <strong>the</strong> duty <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> owner, operator or superintendent<br />

<strong>of</strong> any or all coal breakers, to have <strong>the</strong>m properly heated in<br />

order to prevent injury to <strong>the</strong> health <strong>of</strong> pin-sons employed <strong>the</strong>rein.<br />

Rule 54. For <strong>the</strong> purpose <strong>of</strong> making known <strong>the</strong> rules and <strong>the</strong> provisions<br />

<strong>of</strong> this act to all persons employed in<br />

or about such mine or<br />

colliery (o which (his act applies, an abstract <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> act and rules<br />

shall be posted up in legible characters in some conspicuous place<br />

or places at or near <strong>the</strong> mine or colliery, where <strong>the</strong>y may be conveniently<br />

read by <strong>the</strong> persons employed, and so <strong>of</strong>ten as <strong>the</strong> same becomes<br />

obliterated or destroyed <strong>the</strong> owner, operator or superintendent<br />

shall cause <strong>the</strong>m to be renewed wi(h all reasonable dispatch. Any<br />

person who pulls down, injures or defaces such abstract <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> act or<br />

rules when j)Osted up in pursuance to <strong>the</strong> provisions <strong>of</strong> this act, shall<br />

be guilt^'^<br />

<strong>of</strong> an <strong>of</strong>fense against this act.<br />

Rule 55. No person or persons working in any coal mine or colliery<br />

shall cut any props or timbers while <strong>the</strong> same are in position to<br />

support <strong>the</strong> ro<strong>of</strong> or sides. When it becomes necessary to remove<br />

any <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> said props or timbers for (he purpose <strong>of</strong> mining coal that<br />

may be sup[)orted by <strong>the</strong> same, to dislodge any <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> said props or<br />

timbers, it must be done by blasting.<br />

Rule 56. It shall not be lawful for any mine foreman or superintendent<br />

<strong>of</strong> any mine or colliery to employ any person who is not com-
