The examination <strong>of</strong> candidates for certificates as mine foremen<br />

and assistant mine foremen for <strong>the</strong> Eighth Anthracite District was<br />

held at Pottsville, in June, 1897.<br />

The examining board was composed <strong>of</strong> Thomas Doyle, superintendent;<br />

David Lucker and Thonms Holihan, miners, and John Maguire,<br />

Mine inspector.<br />

The following were recommended to <strong>the</strong> Secretary <strong>of</strong> <strong>Internal</strong> Affaii'S<br />

for certificates <strong>of</strong> qualification:<br />

Henry Oscar Kowe, Tower City, as mine foreman.<br />

George Maley, Kranchdale, as mine foreman.<br />

Description <strong>of</strong> Fatal Accidents.<br />

A. sad accident occurred at <strong>the</strong> New Wadesville shaft about 7<br />

o'clock on <strong>the</strong> morning <strong>of</strong> January 13, while <strong>the</strong> men engaged in siidving<br />

tlu' shaft were changing shifts. Four <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> day shift men liad<br />

gone down, and four <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> night shift had been hoisted to <strong>the</strong> surface.<br />

After <strong>the</strong>y had gotten <strong>of</strong>f <strong>the</strong> bucket, William Leonard Taylor, chargeman<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> day shift, willi Ileni-y Flynu, John Taylor and Peter Linko,<br />

laluireis, got on (o go down, taking with lliem Mat<strong>the</strong>w l\(Hlding1on.
