Clemmiis bad been warned about moving<br />

his trip on to <strong>the</strong> main entry, without first being notified by <strong>the</strong><br />

trapper that <strong>the</strong> track was clear. Only a few days before <strong>the</strong> accident<br />

he had a narrow escape from being caught in <strong>the</strong> same way. This accident<br />

occured at ^^'altou s Upper Mine on February 17th.<br />

On Mai'ch 2nd, Frederick Keese, American, a miner aged 57 years<br />

was injured by a fall <strong>of</strong> slate in room 3, entry 11, Chamouni mine,<br />

and died about ten hours after. The deceased, Richard Thompson<br />

and Edward Grieze, worked toge<strong>the</strong>r and a short time before Reese<br />

received his injuries a shot had been tired in <strong>the</strong> "half shearing;" some<br />

coal from <strong>the</strong> shot struck a post which had been under <strong>the</strong> slate and<br />

dislodged it. Thompson informed <strong>the</strong> writer that he asked <strong>the</strong> deceased<br />

to put <strong>the</strong> post up again, but he made reply that '"<strong>the</strong> slate<br />

would stay up a year." He <strong>the</strong>n started to "bear in" on <strong>the</strong> corner <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> butt, but had not done much until <strong>the</strong> slate fell, resulting as above<br />

stated. I cannot refrain from stating that this accident was due, in<br />

great measure, to carelessness, and it could have been averted<br />

if but ordinary care had been exercised. Reese left a wife and three<br />

children.<br />

Josei)h Perkins, English, a miner was fatally injured at <strong>the</strong> Amity<br />

mine, March 26, by having been caught by a loaded slate car while<br />

riding out <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> mine. The deceased had finished his day's work<br />

and got on a trip <strong>of</strong> cars to ride out. On this trip, besides <strong>the</strong> coal<br />

cars was one <strong>of</strong> slate; between this and on <strong>the</strong> bumpers <strong>of</strong> a coal car,<br />

<strong>the</strong> deceased rode.<br />

AN'hen near <strong>the</strong> mine entiauce <strong>the</strong> driver cut <strong>the</strong><br />

slate loose from <strong>the</strong> tri]» so as to let it run on to a switch used for a<br />

dirt duiMp; this was imuuMliatcly followed by Perkins falling <strong>of</strong>t" <strong>the</strong><br />

car on wliich he was lidiug, aiul before he could recover himself, <strong>the</strong><br />

slate car was on liini. The driver, George Grooms, informed <strong>the</strong><br />

wri1 olT, and he tried to stop <strong>the</strong> slate car<br />

before it reached Pei-kins, but could not. Perkins was O:} years <strong>of</strong> age<br />

and leaves a widow.<br />

P.y ;) fall <strong>of</strong> slate in Goal TilufT mine, on Ajtril 1, Alfred Ferrina,<br />

Freiu-h, miner, Avas instantly killed. Deceased was ~)-i years <strong>of</strong> age<br />

and a widower.<br />

John Gallagber, Irish, a miner aged 44 years, was fatally injured<br />

Ai)ril 1), in Ghamouni mine, by slate discharging posts and s( liking<br />

him, resulting in his death some four days after. Gallagher left a<br />

wife and three children.<br />

On April 22, Herman Stanbaugh, German, miner, aged 55 years, was<br />

so badly injured at Snowden mine, by a fall <strong>of</strong> ro<strong>of</strong> coal that death<br />

re«ult
