Duties <strong>of</strong> Engineer.<br />

Rule 20. It shall be <strong>the</strong> duty <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> engineer to keep a careful<br />

watch over his engine and all machinery under his charge and see<br />

that <strong>the</strong> boilers are properly supplied with water, cleaned and inspected<br />

at proper intervals, and that <strong>the</strong> steam pressure does not exceed<br />

at any time <strong>the</strong> limit allowed by <strong>the</strong> superintendent.<br />

Rule 21. He shall make himself acquainted with <strong>the</strong> signal codes<br />

provided for in this act.<br />

Rule 22. He shall not allow any unauthorized person to enter <strong>the</strong><br />

engine house, nei<strong>the</strong>r shall he allow any person to handle or run <strong>the</strong><br />

engine, without <strong>the</strong> permission <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> superintendent.<br />

Rule 28. When workmen are being raised or lowered he shall take<br />

special precautions to keep <strong>the</strong> engine well under control.<br />

Rule 24. The locomotive engineer must keep a sharp lookout<br />

ahead <strong>of</strong> his engine and sound <strong>the</strong> whistle or alarm bell frequently<br />

when coming near <strong>the</strong> partings or landings; he must not exceed <strong>the</strong><br />

speed allowed by <strong>the</strong> mine foreman or superintendent. He must<br />

not allow any person except his attendants, to ride on <strong>the</strong> engine or<br />

on <strong>the</strong> full cars.<br />

Rule 25.<br />

Duties <strong>of</strong> Firemen.<br />

Every fireman and o<strong>the</strong>r person in charge <strong>of</strong> a boiler or<br />

boilers for <strong>the</strong> generation <strong>of</strong> steam shall keep a careful watch <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

same; he shall see that <strong>the</strong> steam pressure does not at any time exceed<br />

<strong>the</strong> limit allowed by <strong>the</strong> superintendent; he shall frequently try<br />

<strong>the</strong> safety-valve and shall<br />

not increase <strong>the</strong> weight on <strong>the</strong> same; be<br />

shall maintain a proper depth <strong>of</strong> water in each boiler, and if anything<br />

should happen to prevent this, he shall report <strong>the</strong> same witi><br />

out delay to <strong>the</strong> superintendent, or o<strong>the</strong>r person designated by <strong>the</strong><br />

superintendent, and take such o<strong>the</strong>r action as may, under <strong>the</strong> particular<br />

circumstances, be necessary for <strong>the</strong> protection <strong>of</strong> life and <strong>the</strong><br />

preservation <strong>of</strong> property.<br />

Rule 26.<br />

Duties <strong>of</strong> Fan Engineer.<br />

The engineer in charge <strong>of</strong> any ventilating fan must keep<br />

it running at such speed as <strong>the</strong> mine foreman directs in writing. In<br />

case <strong>of</strong> accident to <strong>the</strong> boiler or fan nuichinery, not rcMjuiring <strong>the</strong> immediate<br />

withdrawal <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> men from <strong>the</strong> mine by reason <strong>of</strong> serious<br />

interruption <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ventilation, he shall invariably notify <strong>the</strong> mine<br />

foreman.<br />

If ordinary' repairs <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> fan or machinery becomes necessary,<br />

he must give timely notice to <strong>the</strong> mine foreman and await his<br />

instructions before stopping it. He shall also examine at <strong>the</strong><br />
