coal being rccjuircd for tlie engine liouse, tlie last car was cut olf tlie<br />

trip, to be used at that place. The dilly rider suggested that <strong>the</strong> car<br />

be pushed to <strong>the</strong> engine house, but Taylor said "it can be done much<br />

easier by <strong>the</strong> engine." He <strong>the</strong>n attached <strong>the</strong> line to <strong>the</strong> wagon and<br />

signalled <strong>the</strong> engineer to start <strong>the</strong> engine; this was done, <strong>the</strong> deceased<br />

walking in front <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> car. He had not proceeded far until he was<br />

seen to fall; <strong>the</strong> engine was stopped immediately, but not in time<br />

to prevent <strong>the</strong> car from running on him. An inquest was held and a<br />

verdict <strong>of</strong> accidental death rendered. Taylor left a widow but no<br />

children. This accident occurred on May 4.<br />

On May 11, Joseph Scheplick, I'olander, miner, aged 30 years, was<br />

instantly killed by a fall <strong>of</strong> slate in Caledonia mine. The deceased<br />

worked in room 47, entry 5. At <strong>the</strong> time <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> accident he was<br />

knocking coal. The slate that fell on him measured seven feet long,<br />

four feet wide and about twelve inches thick, and formed what is<br />

known in nuning parlance as a ''pot." The body <strong>of</strong> Scheplick was<br />

entirely' covered by <strong>the</strong> slate which had to be broken before <strong>the</strong> body<br />

could be gotten out. Deceased left a widow but no children.<br />

Stephen Balaback, Hungarian, miner, aged 28 years, was instantly<br />

killed by a fall <strong>of</strong> slate in Anchor mine on May 12.<br />

curred in room 18, entry 9. At <strong>the</strong> time <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> accident, he was<br />

lining a car from one side <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> room. On examining <strong>the</strong> slate, I<br />

found slips with <strong>the</strong> angle <strong>of</strong> fracture against safety.<br />

John Galbasine, Halian, a miner, was instantly killed by being run<br />

over by <strong>the</strong> dilly trip in Ivill mine on May 24. The deceased was on his<br />

way out <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> mine, and a trip <strong>of</strong> forty empty cars was standing near<br />

<strong>the</strong> main entrance, and when <strong>the</strong> deceased reached <strong>the</strong>m he, it<br />

is supposed,<br />

be pulled out and put his<br />

dinner bucket and three picks, which he was carrying, into one <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> cars. The trip started inwaid and he <strong>the</strong>n made an attempt to<br />

i-emove <strong>the</strong> bucket and picks. During this time he w\as walking along<br />

<strong>the</strong> roadside, and before he realized his danger, he reached a narrow<br />

place and was thrown under <strong>the</strong> cars with result as above stated.<br />

The deceased w\as 37 years <strong>of</strong> age and singl(\<br />

John Leckman, Slav, a miner, aged 27 years and single, was injured<br />

in Oastonville No. 1 mine, by a fall <strong>of</strong> slat(\ This accident occurred<br />

on ^fay 20, and at <strong>the</strong> time it was not considered a serious case, but a<br />

fewdays after, he made a trip to Carnegie to consult a ])hysician, and,<br />

ujKm leaching <strong>the</strong> Oastonville station, on his return home, he walked<br />

to his boarding liouse; this, and o<strong>the</strong>r indiscretions on his i)art, caused<br />

his injuries to take a dangerous turn, which resulted in his death on<br />

July 2.<br />
