No. 10. EIGHTH ANTHRACITE DISTRICT. 217<br />

Lincoln Colliery.<br />

A tunnel is being driven from <strong>the</strong> No. 1 vein to <strong>the</strong> No. 2 vein. It<br />

starts about 100 feet east <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> No. 1 vein slope,on <strong>the</strong> sixth lift below<br />

water level, and will connect with <strong>the</strong> bottom <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> No. 2 vein slope in<br />

<strong>the</strong> sixth lift. It is now in 71 yards, and when completed will be<br />

about 300 yards long.<br />

Phoenix Park No. 3 Colliery.<br />

A tunnel, which starts at No. 43 chute on <strong>the</strong> fifth lift, East Diamond<br />

vein gangway, has been driven through <strong>the</strong> saddle from <strong>the</strong> south to<br />

<strong>the</strong> north dip, <strong>the</strong> length <strong>of</strong> which is 435 feet. A proving hole was<br />

sunk from <strong>the</strong> top <strong>of</strong> saddle on <strong>the</strong> north dip, to <strong>the</strong> level <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> gangway<br />

before <strong>the</strong> tunnel was commenced.<br />

Thomaston Colliery.<br />

The new Lelar vein slope has been sunk to a depth <strong>of</strong> 306 2-3 yards<br />

from <strong>the</strong> surface and 85 yards below <strong>the</strong> second lift on bottom <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Crosby vein slope; at <strong>the</strong> bottom <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> slope a short tunnel cuts <strong>the</strong><br />

Crosby vein, v/hich is 11 feet thick and <strong>of</strong> fair coal. Gangways are<br />

turned east and west, and connections are now being made from <strong>the</strong><br />

Crosby vein to <strong>the</strong> airhole on <strong>the</strong> Lelar vein, east <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> slope, which<br />

io being made with a sectional area <strong>of</strong> 80 square feet.<br />

Glendower Colliery.<br />

A tunnel has been started at <strong>the</strong> bottom <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> No. 2 plane, in <strong>the</strong><br />

Glendower slope, to be driven to <strong>the</strong> Buck Mountain vein. It is now<br />

in about 20 yards.<br />

Wadesville Shaft Colliery.<br />

At <strong>the</strong> old shaft, ten new return boilers have been erected, taking<br />

<strong>the</strong> place <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> old boiler plant. A new pair <strong>of</strong> hoisting engines, with<br />

cylinders thirty inclies in diameter, and sixty-inch stroke, were<br />

erected in place <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> old coal hoisting engines, with which <strong>the</strong>y<br />

started to hoist <strong>the</strong> water out <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> shaft on July 14, <strong>the</strong> water at<br />

that time being up to <strong>the</strong> water levels.<br />

The new shaft was completed on <strong>the</strong> 3d <strong>of</strong> Aj^ril, being 749 feet in<br />

depth from <strong>the</strong> surface to <strong>the</strong> bottom slate <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Mammoth vein. The<br />

Mamniotli vein is 25 feet thick and <strong>of</strong> good coal. Above <strong>the</strong> Mammoth<br />

<strong>the</strong>re is 12 feet <strong>of</strong> slate between it and <strong>the</strong> Seven Foot vein, which is<br />

S feet thick <strong>of</strong> good coal. Above <strong>the</strong> v'^even Foot <strong>the</strong>re is 7 feet <strong>of</strong> slate<br />

between it and <strong>the</strong> Four Foot vein, which is 4 feet thick <strong>of</strong> good coal;<br />

dip, 1!) degrees south.<br />

A trial hole has been sunk on <strong>the</strong> Seven Foot vein, south <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> shaft<br />

to a depth <strong>of</strong> 30 yards. Pump gangways were driven in <strong>the</strong> Seven Foot
