Rule 34.<br />

He shall also see that no driver, or o<strong>the</strong>r person, ascends<br />

<strong>the</strong> shaft with any horse or mule, unless <strong>the</strong> said horse or mule is secured<br />

in a suitable box, or safely penned, and only <strong>the</strong> driver in<br />

charge <strong>of</strong> said horse or mule shall accompany it in any case.<br />

Rule 35.<br />

Duties <strong>of</strong> Top Man.<br />

The top man <strong>of</strong> any slope, or incline plane, shall be very<br />

careful to close <strong>the</strong> safety block, or o<strong>the</strong>r device, as soon as <strong>the</strong> cars<br />

have reached <strong>the</strong> landing so as to prevent any loose or runaway cars<br />

from descending <strong>the</strong> slope, or incline plane, and in no case shall such<br />

safety block, or o<strong>the</strong>r device, be withdrawn until <strong>the</strong> cars are coupled<br />

to <strong>the</strong> rope or chain and <strong>the</strong> proper signal given. He shall carefully<br />

inspect daily all <strong>the</strong> machinery in and about <strong>the</strong> check house, and th
