working in <strong>the</strong> mine or not, unless operations were indefinitely suspended.<br />

8ome <strong>of</strong> tlie shelter holes were also obstructed by slate,<br />

and <strong>the</strong> roadways were very wet and muddy. Quantity <strong>of</strong> air at<br />

outlet, 18,000 cubic feet per minute. The mine is worked on <strong>the</strong><br />

double entry plan. The coal is mined by hand labor and is hauled<br />

from <strong>the</strong> mine to <strong>the</strong> head <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> incline plane by mules, and is <strong>the</strong>n<br />

run down <strong>the</strong> gravity plane to <strong>the</strong> tipple.<br />

Montours.—This mine was in reasonably good condition when last<br />

inspected. Quantity <strong>of</strong> air passing at <strong>the</strong> outlet, 86,000 cubic feet per<br />

minute. The coal is mined by hand labor and <strong>the</strong> hauling is done by<br />

<strong>the</strong> head and tail rope system. The mine is worked on <strong>the</strong> double<br />

entry plan. A furnace is used to produce ventilation.<br />

<strong>Mines</strong> West <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Allegheny River.<br />

Tine Creek.—A\'as in reasonably good condition when last inspected<br />

excepting that some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> shelter holes were obstructed by slate and<br />

dirt. Quantity <strong>of</strong> air at inlet, 22,560 cubic feet per minute, and about<br />

8,000 cubic feet was measui-ed near <strong>the</strong> face <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> entries, where<br />

<strong>the</strong> men were working. The system <strong>of</strong> working is that <strong>of</strong> double<br />

entry. The coal is mined by hand labor and <strong>the</strong> hauling is done by<br />

animal power. The ventilation is produced by a 12-foot fan <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Ouibal type.<br />

Hite.—This mine has been kept in<br />

very good condition during <strong>the</strong><br />

year. The coal field is being developed on <strong>the</strong> double entry plan.<br />

The coal is mined by hand lalxu' and is hauled from <strong>the</strong> mine to <strong>the</strong><br />

tipple by <strong>the</strong> head and tail rope system. An 8-foot single inlet Capell<br />

fan is used to i)roduce <strong>the</strong> ventilation. Average quantity <strong>of</strong> air passing<br />

near <strong>the</strong> face <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> enlries, about 6,000 cubic feet per minute, and<br />

48,000 cubic feet were measured at <strong>the</strong> outlet.<br />

West Tarentum.—The condition <strong>of</strong> this mine has been improved<br />

since my last report. The airways, doors and stoppings have been<br />

rei)aired. I measured 5,900 cubic feet <strong>of</strong> air passing <strong>the</strong> outlet per<br />

minute, which was being fairly well distributed to <strong>the</strong> face <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

workings <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> two butt entries that were being driven. About<br />

twenty miners only are employed.<br />

lirakenridge.—The condition <strong>of</strong> this mine is favorable. Quantity<br />

<strong>of</strong> air at <strong>the</strong> outlet, 16,800 cubic fe(4 per minute, which was being<br />

fairly well distributed to <strong>the</strong> face <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> workings. The coal is mined<br />

by hand labor and is hauled from <strong>the</strong> mine by animal power. A furnace<br />

is used to i)roduce ventilation.<br />

Natrona.—This mine is worked principally on <strong>the</strong> single entry sys-<br />

U'Ui. The coal is mined by hand labor, and it is hauled from <strong>the</strong> mine
