The main gangways<br />

vein 75 yards long on each side <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> shaft.<br />

were <strong>the</strong>n opened east and west on <strong>the</strong> Seven Foot vein. At 243<br />

feet east <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> shaft two holes were driven up <strong>the</strong> pitch to tap <strong>the</strong><br />

water in <strong>the</strong> old shaft, which was successfully done. A pair <strong>of</strong> new<br />

hoisting engines were erected, having 40-inch diameter cylinders and<br />

(JO-inch stroke. These engines were started to hoist water on November<br />

13, with two tanks, each holding eighteen hundred gallons, and<br />

at this writing <strong>the</strong> water has been nearly all taken out to <strong>the</strong> bottom<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> old shaft.<br />

Eagle Hill Colliery.<br />

A new air shaft is being sunk from <strong>the</strong> surface to <strong>the</strong> workings below,<br />

having an area <strong>of</strong> 120 square feet. It is now down 175 feet, and<br />

when completed will be provided with appliances for hoisting men,<br />

which will make an additional outlet.<br />

A new Cahall steam boiler <strong>of</strong> 250-liorse power, which is fired direct,<br />

has been added to <strong>the</strong> steam plant. Two more <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> same type are<br />

being erected, which will utilize <strong>the</strong> waste heat from twenty plain<br />

cylinder boilers.<br />

Collieries Abandoned.<br />

The East Franklin colliery, which has been idle since 1893, was dismantled<br />

and abandoned during <strong>the</strong> year.<br />

At <strong>the</strong> Otto colliery, <strong>the</strong> bore hole slope workings, which are inside<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> old White Ash slope workings, were stopped on September 17,<br />

and abandoned. Both collieries are owned by <strong>the</strong> Philadelphia and<br />

Reading Coal and Iron Company.
