A new shop has also been built, size lGx3Gxl00 feet, entirely <strong>of</strong><br />

brick, with sleel trusses and slat(» ro<strong>of</strong>, divided equally into carpenter,<br />

blacksmith and machine shops. There is placed in <strong>the</strong> machine<br />

shop, one engine la<strong>the</strong>, 24x10 feet, and one drill press, and <strong>the</strong><br />

intention is to add to it a planer, thus enabling <strong>the</strong> operators to do<br />

all <strong>the</strong>ir own re[)air work, which will greatly reduce <strong>the</strong> cost <strong>of</strong> keeping<br />

up repairs to machinery. Mine foreman, John L. Duncan.<br />

Stnithwest N;-'.! "B" Shaft.—This mine was in good condition<br />

on each exajuination. All parts are supi)lied with plenty <strong>of</strong> fresh<br />

air. The quantity <strong>of</strong> air passing at <strong>the</strong> outlet, when last measured,<br />

was SG,4S0 cubic feet per minute. Mine foreman, John Whitfield.<br />

Southwest No. 2 Slope.—The general condition <strong>of</strong> this mine is good,<br />

both in regard to ventilation and drainage. I measured a volume <strong>of</strong><br />

10(5,400 cubic feet <strong>of</strong> air per minute in circulation, which w'as being<br />

well conducted through <strong>the</strong> working parts <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> mine.<br />

Southw'est No. 3 Slope.—The condition <strong>of</strong> this mine was satisfactory.<br />

The quantit}- <strong>of</strong> air passing at <strong>the</strong> outlet per minute was 43,040<br />

cubic feet, which was being well conveyed to <strong>the</strong> face <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> workings.<br />

The drainage w-as also in good condition.<br />

The management should be highly commended for <strong>the</strong> precaution<br />

<strong>the</strong>y have taken as a means <strong>of</strong> protection to both life and property,<br />

by introducing into this mine <strong>the</strong> use <strong>of</strong> locked safet}^ lamps during<br />

<strong>the</strong> year.<br />

The hauling has l)een extended about 1,000 feet during <strong>the</strong><br />

year, thus putting <strong>the</strong> '"lay <strong>of</strong>t" within 200 feet <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> nearest<br />

miner, and reducing <strong>the</strong> number <strong>of</strong> drivers from ten to eight. This<br />

is a tail rojie haulage and has given <strong>the</strong> best <strong>of</strong> satisfaction. The<br />

outside improvements aie a new stable, which has been built (<strong>the</strong> old<br />

one having been burned), <strong>the</strong> dimensions <strong>of</strong> which are 12 feet 6 inches<br />

b}' 40x04 feet, and is built entirely <strong>of</strong> brick, with steel trusses and<br />

slate ro<strong>of</strong>. A hay house has also been built, 150 feet away from<br />

stable, which is connected by a 30-iiich gauge track, running through<br />

tlic full length <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> stable. A light truck is used to take hay and<br />

grain from hay house to stable. By this arrangement, <strong>the</strong> stable is<br />

made practically tire pro<strong>of</strong>.<br />

The hoisting shaft, which is int feet deej), has been retimbered with<br />

12x12 inch timber from top to bottom. This work was done while<br />

<strong>the</strong> plant was in oiieration. Mine foreman, Robert llair.<br />

Southw^est No. 4 Slope.—General condition <strong>of</strong> mine, satisfactory.<br />

(Jood sweeping air cunents are conducted through all ])arts <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

workings. The drainage is also in satisfactory condition. Air in<br />

circulation, when last measured, 44,800 cubic feet per minute. Locked<br />

safety lamps has been introduced into this mine during <strong>the</strong> year.<br />
