an overhead cover. Shultz was familiar with <strong>the</strong> rules <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> mine,<br />

having been employed in and about it for several years.<br />

Joseph Duffy, a miner aged 15 years, was instantly killed by a fall<br />

<strong>of</strong> slate in <strong>the</strong> Alexandria mine on September 21. The coroner held<br />

an inquest and a verdict <strong>of</strong> accidental death was rendered.<br />

On October 14 Jacob Kupsley, a Slavish miner in Mammoth shaft<br />

mine, was injured by a wagon running over his right leg below <strong>the</strong><br />

knee, crushing it so badly that he died on <strong>the</strong> afternoon <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> same<br />

day.<br />

Alexander Metz, an American miner, 40 years <strong>of</strong> age, was instantly<br />

killed in Strickler mine, on October 26, by a fall <strong>of</strong> "horse-back." A.<br />

J. Saylor, who was injured by <strong>the</strong> same fall, stated, at <strong>the</strong> investigation,<br />

that he considered <strong>the</strong> place perfectly safe and well timbered,<br />

and G. W. Pike, <strong>the</strong> driver who hauled a wagon from <strong>the</strong>re about<br />

twenty-five minutes before <strong>the</strong> accident, said <strong>the</strong> same.<br />

Marshall Major, an American miner, was instantly killed at Isabella<br />

Furnace mine by a fall <strong>of</strong> slate and rock, while at work on room<br />

pillar No. 19 on third cross <strong>of</strong> Martin's entry, November 6.<br />

John Krackan, a German miner, was instantly killed in Penn Gas<br />

No. 1 mine, November 6, by a fall <strong>of</strong> slate.<br />

William Leasure, an American miner, was fatally injured by a fall<br />

<strong>of</strong> slate in Sandy Creek mine on November 16, and died on <strong>the</strong> 23d <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> same month. The coroner held an inquest and a verdict <strong>of</strong> accidental<br />

death was rendered. Deceased was 17 years <strong>of</strong> age.
