Williams Colliery.<br />

A tunnel, 260 feet long, lias been driven north from <strong>the</strong> Tracy vein,<br />

cutting a vein about seven feet thick. An overcast tunnel is being<br />

driven back to <strong>the</strong> Tracy, at right angles to dip, to ventilate this vein.<br />

Bell Colliery.<br />

The old breaker was torn down, and a more modern one erected<br />

in its stead, which commenced operations about October 1.<br />

Ellsworth Colliery.<br />

The breaker was destroyed by fire on <strong>the</strong> night <strong>of</strong> October 5. A<br />

new and more modern breaker is now in course <strong>of</strong> construction.<br />

Little<br />

Diamond Colliery.<br />

A new lift <strong>of</strong> 225 feet was sunk on <strong>the</strong> Little Diamond vein slope,<br />

making <strong>the</strong> depth from surface about 475 feet.<br />

Improvements Made During <strong>the</strong> Year 1897 by <strong>the</strong> Philadelphia and<br />

West Brookside Colliery.<br />

The No. 4 vein slope, overlying <strong>the</strong> No. 3 No. 5 vein slope, has<br />

been sunk during <strong>the</strong> year 462 feet, making a total depth <strong>of</strong> 2,175 feet.<br />

The seventh lift gangways have been opened and <strong>the</strong> sinking is being<br />

continued. In <strong>the</strong> No. 3 No. 5 vein slope, a tunnel has been driven 300<br />

feet east <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> slope on <strong>the</strong> No. 7 lift, below water level to <strong>the</strong> No. 6<br />

vein, cutting <strong>the</strong> vein about three feet thick, having a pitch <strong>of</strong><br />

fifteen degrees; lenglh <strong>of</strong> tunnel, 126 feet.<br />

In llie No. 4 slo}>e. <strong>the</strong> tunnel that was commenced at No. 25 breast,<br />

in West gangway' in 1896, has been completed, cutting <strong>the</strong> No. 4 vein,<br />

in good condition. Length <strong>of</strong> tunnel, forty-seven and one-third yards.<br />

^\no<strong>the</strong>r tunnel has been driven from <strong>the</strong> No. 5 vein to <strong>the</strong> No. 4 vein,<br />

in same gangway, at No. 60 breast, cutting <strong>the</strong> No. 4 vein, in good condition.<br />

The East Brookside No. 4 vein tendei' slojte has been sunk during <strong>the</strong><br />

year l.sO yards, making <strong>the</strong> dcplh from surface 42.'i 1-3 yards, and <strong>the</strong><br />

sinking will be continued to <strong>the</strong> level <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> lower lift <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> No. 5<br />

Acin slo])e. In <strong>the</strong> lower lift <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> No. 5 vein slo|)e a tunnel has been<br />

driven opj)Osite <strong>the</strong> bottom <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> plane, from <strong>the</strong> No. 5 vein to <strong>the</strong> No.<br />

4 vein, length 89 yards. A tunnel is also being driven fi'om <strong>the</strong> No. 4<br />

vein lo <strong>the</strong> No. 5 vein, o[)posite <strong>the</strong> bottom <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> sloi)e.
