immediately and give immediate warning to persons in <strong>the</strong><br />

mine.<br />

Duties <strong>of</strong> Furnaeemen.<br />

Rule 27. The furnace man must attend to his duties with regularity,<br />

and in ease he should be likely to be <strong>of</strong>f work for any reason<br />

whatever, he must give timely notice to <strong>the</strong> mine foreman.<br />

Rule 28. The furnace man must at all times keep a clear, brisk<br />

fire and <strong>the</strong> fire must not be smo<strong>the</strong>red with coal or slack during<br />

working hours, nor shall he allow ashes to accumulate excessively<br />

on or under <strong>the</strong> bars, or in <strong>the</strong> approaches to <strong>the</strong> furnace, and ashes<br />

shall be cooled before being removed.<br />

- Rule 29. The furnace man must promptly obey <strong>the</strong> instructions <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> mine foreman.<br />

Rule 30.<br />

SHAFTS AND SLOPES.<br />

Duties <strong>of</strong> Hookers-On.<br />

The hookers-on at <strong>the</strong> bottom <strong>of</strong> any slope shall be very<br />

careful to see that <strong>the</strong> cars are properly coupled to a rope or chain<br />

and that <strong>the</strong> safet^^-catch or o<strong>the</strong>r device is properly attached to <strong>the</strong><br />

car before giving <strong>the</strong> signal to <strong>the</strong> engineer.<br />

Duties <strong>of</strong> Cagers.<br />

Rule 31. The eager at <strong>the</strong> bottom <strong>of</strong> any shaft shall not attempt to<br />

withdraw <strong>the</strong> car until <strong>the</strong> cage comes to rest, and when putting <strong>the</strong><br />

full car on <strong>the</strong> cage he must be very careful to see that <strong>the</strong> springs<br />

or catches are properly adjusted so as to keep <strong>the</strong> car in its<br />

proper<br />

place before giving <strong>the</strong> signal to <strong>the</strong> engineer.<br />

Rule 32. At every shaft or slope mine in which provision is made<br />

in this act for lowering and hoisting persons, a headman and footman<br />

shall be designated by <strong>the</strong> superintendent or mine foreman, who<br />

shall be at <strong>the</strong>ir proper places from <strong>the</strong> time that persons begin to<br />

descend until all <strong>the</strong> persons who may be at <strong>the</strong> bottom <strong>of</strong> said shaft<br />

or slope, when quitting work, shall be hoisted; such headman and<br />

footman shall personalh* attend to <strong>the</strong> signals and see that <strong>the</strong> provisions<br />

<strong>of</strong> this act in respect to lowering or hoisting persons in shafts<br />

or slopes shall be complied with.<br />

Rule 33. He shall not allow any tools to be placed on <strong>the</strong> same cage<br />

with men or boys, nor on ei<strong>the</strong>r cage when persons are being hoisted<br />

out <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> mine, or being lowered into <strong>the</strong> mine, except when for <strong>the</strong><br />

purpose <strong>of</strong> rejtairing <strong>the</strong> shaft or machinery <strong>the</strong>rein. The men shall<br />

place <strong>the</strong>ir tools in cars provided for (hat ]»nr])ose which car, or cars,<br />

shall be hoisted or lowered before and after <strong>the</strong> men have been<br />

hoisted or lowered. And he shall immediately infonn <strong>the</strong> mine fore<br />

man <strong>of</strong> any violation <strong>of</strong> this rule.
