At <strong>the</strong>se strippings 173,180 yards <strong>of</strong> earth and rock were ex<br />

tavated during <strong>the</strong> year.<br />

Lehigh Valley Coal Company, Lehigh Division.<br />

Hazleton Colliery No. 1.—Completion <strong>of</strong> a new 20 inch diameter<br />

reversible fan, connected by shaft to <strong>the</strong> Wharton vein, south dip.<br />

The whole structure is <strong>of</strong> brick, iron and stone. This fan has dispensed<br />

with <strong>the</strong> old fan and has satisfactorily established a permanent<br />

means <strong>of</strong> ventilation.<br />

A tunnel has been started southward from <strong>the</strong> third lift and is<br />

being extended southward across <strong>the</strong> No. 1 basin into <strong>the</strong> Hazleton<br />

No. 6 basin with a view <strong>of</strong> proving and developing all<br />

<strong>the</strong> overlying<br />

Aeins which heret<strong>of</strong>ore have not been worked in this region.<br />

New stables in rock have been made at <strong>the</strong> Fifth lift and a tunnel<br />

has been strirted on this same level southward to <strong>the</strong> overlying<br />

veins.<br />

The strippings at this colliery have been extensively increased<br />

during <strong>the</strong> past year.<br />

A number <strong>of</strong> improvements were also made to <strong>the</strong> breaker.<br />

Spring Brook Colliery.—A new slope has been sunk inside on <strong>the</strong><br />

Mammoth vein from <strong>the</strong> third lift to <strong>the</strong> basin.<br />

A new slope has been sunk on <strong>the</strong> Buck Mountain vein from <strong>the</strong><br />

shaft level to <strong>the</strong> basin.<br />

New rolls and o<strong>the</strong>r improvements have been made to <strong>the</strong> breaker<br />

and boiler house.<br />

Spring Mountain No. 4 Colliery.—This breaker was burned on<br />

May 10, but <strong>the</strong> cause is shrouded in mystery, as every care was<br />

taken by <strong>the</strong> company to prevent fires, and <strong>the</strong> breaker had been idle<br />

<strong>the</strong> day })revious.<br />

The coal from this colliery is now being prepared in <strong>the</strong> Spring<br />

Mountain No. 1 breaker. ,<br />

Hazleton Shaft Colliery.—The work <strong>of</strong> sinking this shaft was resumed<br />

in <strong>the</strong> latter part <strong>of</strong> 1897 and is now down to <strong>the</strong> proposed<br />

first landing.<br />

The centralization <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> pum]»ing operations as mentioned in<br />

my last report was completed in August, one year after <strong>the</strong> commencement,<br />

since which time all <strong>the</strong> water made on <strong>the</strong> Hazleton<br />

property is being handled at this one pnmjiing station. The work<br />
