found good in some parts and not so good in <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r parts. An<br />

electric haulage plant has been put in operation during <strong>the</strong> year.<br />

Glen Fisher.—Was idle during <strong>the</strong> entire year.<br />

St. Mary's <strong>Mines</strong>.—The general condition <strong>of</strong> each <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se mines is<br />

fair.<br />

Shawmut <strong>Mines</strong> Nos. 1 and 2.—The general condition <strong>of</strong> both mines<br />

was fair in regard to ventilation and drainage. In No. 1, I measured<br />

1(5,500 cubic feet <strong>of</strong> air passing per minute, which is well distributed<br />

throughout <strong>the</strong> workings. In No. 2, I measured 15,J)00 cubic feet <strong>of</strong><br />

air passing per minute, which is also well distributed.<br />

Mead Run <strong>Mines</strong> Nos. land 2.—These mines are in much better condition<br />

than formerly. The ventilation has been considerably improved<br />

by <strong>the</strong> erection <strong>of</strong> stopijings and doors to conduct <strong>the</strong> air<br />

current around <strong>the</strong> working places. More attention is being given<br />

to <strong>the</strong> requirements <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> law with <strong>the</strong> result that better conditions<br />

exist throughout <strong>the</strong> entire mine.<br />

Shawmut No. 4.—This is a new opening made during <strong>the</strong> year.<br />

Shawmut No. 8.—This is a new opening which was made about <strong>the</strong><br />

beginning <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> year and is equipped with mining machines <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Harrison type.<br />

Jefferson<br />

County <strong>Mines</strong>.<br />

Coal Glen <strong>Mines</strong>, Nos. 2 and 3.—The general" conditions <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se<br />

mines has been very good during <strong>the</strong> year. Ano<strong>the</strong>r drift is being<br />

opened into <strong>the</strong> lower vein, which looks very favorable at present.<br />

The coal is four feet eight inches in height. This makes <strong>the</strong> second<br />

opening to this vein. The ventilation is now produced by a Clark<br />

fan five feet in diameter. A larger fan is being erected, which will<br />

be driven by a twenty-five horse power gas engine.<br />

Kurtz Mine.—This mine was not in operation when last visited.<br />

Walston No. 1.—Mine not in operation when last visited.<br />

Walston Nos. 2 and 3.—These mines are in good condition. Everything<br />

is being done to keep <strong>the</strong>m in a healthful and safe condition.<br />

They have put in a new haulage engine, and sunk a shaft near <strong>the</strong>face<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> workings for drainage and ventilation. They are building<br />

a very large washer for preparing coal for coke, which will soon<br />

be completed.<br />

Brock <strong>Mines</strong>.—These mines are not in <strong>the</strong> best condition. The<br />

drainage and ventilation need improvement. The management oi<br />

<strong>the</strong>se mines was changed on <strong>the</strong> first <strong>of</strong> this year and it is hoped tha^<br />

better results will follow soon.<br />

Adrian Mine.—The (juantity <strong>of</strong> air in circulation in this mine when<br />

last measured was 129,000 cubic feet per minute, which was being<br />

fairly well distributed throughout <strong>the</strong> workings. On some occasions<br />

considerable volumes <strong>of</strong> explosive gas are encountered in <strong>the</strong> seventh
