Thereafter the decision ofthe Board & Engineer regarding what shall be recorded as the correct survey shallbe final.Excavations shall be carried out to the width, lengths and depths shown on theapproved drawings. The Contractor may excavate by any method he considerssuitable, subject to the approval of the Board.Selected granular materials from the excavation as approved by the Board shallbe used in the embankment construction and filling.Unsuitable materials shall be removed from the Site to disposal areas.Cut and fill slopes shall be designed for to be thorough stability. Unless otherwiseindicated On the Drawing the exposed surfaces of all cuttings and embankmentsshall be soiled and turfed to the satisfaction of the Board.The Contractor shall take particular care during the excavation of the foundationto avoid deterioration of the ground due to exposure to the weather. The final120 mm of excavation above formation level shall be carried out by handimmediately before the next stage of construction is to start. A similar methodshall be adopted in the ease of the sides of excavation against which the structureis to bear.The Contractor shall provide all strutting and shoring necessary for the safeexecution of the Works and shall provide the necessary pumps, de-wateringfacilities, and temporary drains to ensure that all excavation shall be carried out inthe dry.The rates for excavation and filling shall be deemed to have included for the fullcost of excavation and filling of the materials including site clearing, stripping oftop soil, all pumping and temporary works necessary to keep the excavation andfilling free from water, temporary shoring and timbering, trimming to line andlevel, stock-piling, handling, compaction, cutting, slope protection, removingsurplus excavated material to spoil tips, together with all other costs incurred incom--plying with the contract requirements.17.3.3 FILLINGThe area to be filled shall be cleared of vegetation and the top soil shall bestripped and stockpiled. All soft yielding material shall be removed and replacedwith granular selected material. Where fill has to be deposited against the hillslope, the Contractor shall take all necessary precautions to ensure that a goodbond is achieved between the fill and the original ground.No fill shall be deposited in the area to be filled until the Board & Engineer hasinspected and given approval. Filling to the formation level shall be brought upform the bottom in uniform compacted layers. Excavated material obtained fromthe Site may be used for embankment construction and filling.Filling, levelling and compaction on the Site shall be carried out in layers notexceeding 300 mm thickness.
