Stage Fright!

Back at The Old Farmhouse Cressida measured
the gap between the two muddy holes which were in
the ground directly below The Forbidden Door.
‘Eleven and a half inches!’ said Cressida
triumphantly. 'That means it’s pretty likely that
whoever was trying to scare us the other night had
stolen Farmer Bagwash's ladder and used it to climb
up onto the first floor of The Barn Theatre!’
‘Super sleuth detective work Cress. Now we've got
to catch them!’ said Sophie. ‘Whoever it is is playing
a pretty mean trick and really frightening some of us.
I mean those of us who think the ghosts are real.’
‘Do you think it could be real ghosts?’ asked
Cressida cautiously.
‘No I don't. Not really. And anyway real ghosts
wouldn't bother to steal a ladder. They would just sort
of float up if they wanted to get anywhere.’
‘And if they aren't ghosts they won't be coming
back through The Forbidden Door because they
haven't got the ladder anymore,’ added Cressie
logically.
‘You're right,’ said Sophie. ‘Still, we'd better keep
a sharp look out!’
