Time to put on our costumes!’ Lou, Harry and Hen had brought all the costumes across from the barn and Lou supervised the dressing. They were just about to start adding face paint when there was a knock on the door. It was Uncle Max. ‘Hello chaps! Thought you might like to use this. A gift from me. Well the truth is the charming make up artist at Stibblewick Theatre was having a clear out and I exchanged this lot for ten jars of my homemade jam, five pots of chutney and a barrel load of apples. Cheerio chaps!’ Uncle Max disappeared as quickly as he had appeared, leaving a large box on the doormat. The girls carried it in and put it down on the kitchen table. ‘Open it! Open it!’ cried Abby excited. Beaky lifted the lid. The box was jammed packed with all sorts of bottles and brushes, lotions and potions, pencils and powder puffs. ‘What is all this stuff ?’ asked Abby perplexed. ‘It’th make up,’ said Susie. ‘I know all about thith. My mum hath tonth and tonth of make up.’ Lou was so excited she thought she might faint! 124
‘It’s not just make up Susie. It’s stage make up!’ Lou dived into the box and started pulling out all sorts of weird and wonderful things. ‘Look at this! Cake eye liner, aluminium glitter, anti shine powder, a pack of cold foam noses, Buster’s blood capsules, phosphorescent cream foundation, long lash mascara.’ ‘Mum’s got thome of that,’ interrupted Susie. ‘Oooh, showgirl eyelashes too - and look at this a packet with two fresh scratches. Oh please, please could I do the make up?’ ‘Can I be your athithtant?’ asked Susie. Soon Lou and Susie had set up a make up table and set to work.
