What's that?’ ‘Someone's coming up the ladder!’ The two figures froze in horror. Sophie and Cressida could not believe their eyes when they saw another figure coming through The Forbidden Door. Could this be a real ghost? A huge, monstrous outline filled the whole opening. It was grunting like a wild beast! As it stepped through the door Sophie in her fright decided this was the moment for action. ‘Now!’ she hissed to Cressie. Trembling Cressida turned on the dim green light. In the same instant Sophie pulled as hard as she could on the rope. The King Arthur ‘ghost’ leapt from his seat and flew dramatically across the room, and went sweeping up - ‘BANG!’, ‘CRASH!’ - hitting the beam. A great cloud of white flour dust shot into the air as the white apparition completed it's flight by diving to the ground knocking over the two smaller figures, 128
flinging them to the ground as they let out almighty screams for help. ‘Aaaaaah! Ghosts! The barn really is haunted! Let's get out of here! Help! Help!’ Somewhere amongst the high pitched screams Cressida heard a fearsome shout. ‘What the blazes is going on?’ ‘Lights on! Lights on!’ whispered Sophie urgently to Cressida. ‘Right-ho! but don't let whoever it is know that we're here yet!’ answered Cressida whose heart was beating nineteen to the dozen. What was going on? Who was the mysterious third figure? Was it really a ghost? Cressida turned on the house lights. Once the room was lit up it took all their efforts not to burst out 129
