‘Berwooomph! For goodness sake young lady.
You're tying me in knots! I'll say sorry and what's
more I'll do something to show that I mean it! Heaven
knows what! But I'll do it!’
'Thank you Farmer Bagwash,’ said Cressida
smiling at him. ‘Don't forget that we're leaving the
village tomorrow so you'll have to be quick.’
‘Leaving the village? But why?’
‘Don't you remember? Our lease on Hawthorne
Cottage runs out tomorrow and we can't afford your
rent. Still, I suppose daddy will be able to get some
work painting and decorating when we get to Ditch.’
‘Ditch! Is that where you're off to? But that's a
dreadful place!’
‘I know Farmer Bagwash. We’re very sorry to be
going and have been so happy in your lovely cottage.
We're so grateful to you that we've been able to live
there at all. But I do understand. Business is business
and emotions can't get in the way!'
