‘Let's get on with the rehearsal.’ Hen was tip top as the Ghost of Christmas Past. She teased Scrooge by hiding and then popping out from nowhere! Peep-po! Peep-po! Look at me flitter and flow! I sparkle and glitter I revolve and dissolve I come and I go! Peep-po! Peep-po! Scrooge became all confused ... I see you! I see you! No! Where did you go? Disappeared! Abracadabra! Puff! Like melted snow! Susie, sitting out in the audience seats, laughed so hard till she cried. This wasn't a scary ghost at all. And Harry as the Ghost of Christmas Present was really jolly, leaping about the stage, waving the magic torch about and calling out: Sprinkle it here, sprinkle it there Spreading joy and merriment in the air! 80
Then came act four, scene one. Only Sophie as Scrooge and Lou as the Ghost of Christmas Future were in the opening part of this scene so the others went to sit in the audience seats and watch. John climbed up to the first floor to operate the lights. ‘Everyone ready?’ checked Cressie. ‘Blackout John!’ John switched on his torch so he could see the dimmer pack. He then switched off the house lights. The children downstairs waited in the pitch-black. John shone his torch onto the dimmer switch and to his delight, crawling in and out of the controls, he spotted a large yellow insect that he had never seen before. What could it be? John completely forgot about the DDC waiting in the darkness down below as he peered closely at the little creature. It was some sort of beetle, pale primrose in colour with little red spots. It crawled slowly across the dimmer switch and down onto the table. Steadily but surely it moved on, unaware of the interest it was creating in the little boy whose nose was now a mere two inches from its back. Suddenly a cry from Sophie jolted John out of his magical insect world. ‘John! What are you doing? We're all waiting!’ 81
