Jumping jellybeans! Sophie was impressed. Cressida had saved the situation. Only one member who was too young to be a member was an absolutely, catastrophically disastrous start to the club. But at least one member was a teeny weeny bit better than no members. They had better get going. After half an hour they had gone through warm up exercises that Cressida had found in a book on drama and were reading their way through a short play called The Revenge of the Raspberry Bun. It was going exceedingly badly. Susannah-Sue was having difficulty in reading her lines so they had to keep stopping to help her. She also spoke so quietly that even if she was speaking they could hardly hear what she was saying. Sophie became exasperated. ‘Speak UP!’ she said to Susannah-Sue. Tears sprung to Susannah-Sue's eyes. ‘You're mean and howwible!’ she cried, for the first time in a loud voice. ‘I don't even want to be in your thilly cwub but my mamma made me come. I want to go home! I want to go home! I want to go home! TAKE ME HOME! TAKE ME HOME! TAKE ME HOME! 18
WAAAAAAAAAH!’ Sophie and Cressida could not believe how wide Susannah-Sue could open her mouth! They stared at her in amazement. The crying got louder and louder until she reached a tremendous, continuous howl. She stopped momentarily to take a big gulp of breath and in that moment the doorbell rang. ‘More visitors,’ called up Sophie's mum. ‘Oh no!’ said Sophie as Susannah-Sue started howling at top volume again. ‘Be quiet Susannah- Sue! I'm sorry! I didn't been to be horrid! Please, please stop crying!’ ‘I'll look after her,’ shouted Cressida with her fingers in her ears. ‘You go down and find out who's here. It might be more members!’ ‘That's what's worrying me,’ said Sophie. ‘If they hear all this noise they'll never want to join!’ Sophie went downstairs and opened the door. 19
