He switched off the normal lights and waited a few moments. It was pitch black in the barn. Sophie, Cressida, John, mum and dad all waited in silence wondering what was about to happen. Nobody said a word. Slowly they noticed a very faint green light shining eerily onto King Arthur's face. It made him look real and ghostly at the same time. The light got stronger. Then it became mixed with red and blue until the whole stage area was bright with colour. Then the colours all faded away. It was dark again. Nobody spoke. Somebody started clapping at the back of the barn. Uncle Max switched on the normal lights - or house lights as he called them - and there was Cressida's mum, Polly. ‘Bravo,’ she said smiling. ‘I can see this is going to be a real theatre!’ ‘I didn’t know you were here,’ said Cressida pleased but surprised to see her mother. ‘It was getting dark so I came up to walk you home. There was no one about at the house and then I saw 48
this green glow coming from the barn so I thought I better come and have a look. Very impressive too.’ Everyone was grinning in delight. Uncle Max had given them a real glimpse of what could be done. ‘It was magical,’ said Sophie enthusiastically. ‘It'll be brilliant for A Christmas Carol, lighting up the ghosts,’ added Cressida. ‘Well let's hope that you do lots and lots of productions,’ added Uncle Max. ‘How lucky you children are to have a theatre of your very own. Wissop is a wonderful village!’ Cressida looked sad. ‘Come on Cressie,’ her mum said. ‘We'd better be going home.’ ‘See you tomorrow Cressie,’ called Sophie. She felt so sorry for her friend. If only she didn’t have to move. And now they'd got another problem. How on earth would they raise forty pounds for the lamps? 49
