The First Member Sophie opened the door and there stood the formidable Mrs Theodora Whistle-White. Tucked down besides her, almost hidden in her mother's furry white coat, was her daughter ... frail little Susannah- Sue Whistle-White. Susannah-Sue Whistle-White had very pale skin, fluffy, mousy coloured hair and in Sophie’s opinion was very feeble and MUCH too young to join the DDC. There was nobody else. ‘Go on, darling,’ hissed Mrs Whistle-White prodding Susannah-Sue. ‘I've come to join the Daithy Dwama Cwub,’ Susannah-Sue said shyly. Or at least that was what Sophie thought she had said. But Susannah-Sue had spoken so quietly that it was impossible to tell. ‘Susannah-Sue absolutely adores drama,’ gushed Mrs Whistle-White. 14
‘You're going to be an actress when you grow up aren't you Susannah-Sue, darling. So naturally talented. Destined for stardom. She auditioned for a new TV drama. She would have got the part if the director hadn't been so blind. Couldn't spot star talent when there it was right in front of his nose. Silly, wretched little man. Anyway that hasn't stopped you Susannah-Sue, has it darling.’ Susannah-Sue just shook her fluffy head and looked bewildered. ‘Where is everybody anyway?’ went on Mrs Whistle-White, Sophie thought, rather rudely. ‘Upstairs,’ said Sophie quickly. ‘Come with me Susannah-Sue and meet the others.’ ‘Bye darling!’ Mrs Whistle-White gave Susannah- Sue a peck on the cheek leaving a bright pink lipstick mark and added in a low voice to Sophie, ‘Susannah- Sue is very, very talented Sophie. You're extremely lucky that she's got time to join your club with all her other commitments. Just remember, my precious daughter is a star in the making. She will be excellent in the lead role in your plays. Farewell for now!’ Sophie was furious! What a rude mother! And why had she brought Susannah-Sue? Did she think the DDC was some kind of nursery for babies? 15
