‘Oh no!’ thought Elsa and Rosalie. ‘I bet he's got<br />

the police outside and we are off to prison<br />

straight away!’<br />

‘Oh no!’ thought Abby. ‘I bet it's going to be<br />

something to do with naughty animals!’<br />

‘Oh no!’ thought Cressida and Sophie. ‘It bet it's<br />

something about having to leave Hawthorne Cottage<br />

tonight!’<br />

Susie, who was feeling very confident after her fine<br />

performance as Tiny Tim, spoke up.<br />

‘Yeth, Farmer Bagwath, what ith it?’<br />

‘Firstly Elsa and Rosalie. I've been watching you<br />

this evening. I've seen how carefully you took the<br />

ticket money. I've observed how meticulous you were<br />

about checking the raffle money. I have decided that<br />

there is hope for you and that you could be honest<br />

and trustworthy girls. I've decided to give you one<br />

more chance. I will not say a word to anyone about<br />

the ladder incident. Shall we say it's a matter<br />

forgotten?’<br />

‘Oh, thank you Farmer Bagwash!’ said the girls<br />

with great relief. Visions of days spent rotting in some<br />

dank, dark prison faded away. The future suddenly<br />

took on a rosy hue.<br />
