Dress Rehearsal Drama! The dress rehearsal was a disaster. It started off well enough. Lou had been sewing like mad and collecting items and hanging them up from the costume beam in the barn. Everyone was thrilled with her work. ‘Only three more items needed,’ she said efficiently checking everything off her list. ‘Abby, have you got that holly to make the Ghost of Christmas Present’s headdress?’ ‘Yes, only Pickle trod on it so some leaves got a bit squashed but I think it just about survived.’ ‘Harry and Hen, did you bring the black material for the Ghost of Christmas Future’s outfit?’ ‘Ooooh!’ said Susie squealing in fright as she saw a monstrous shape swaying on the stage. ‘Only us!’ said Harry and Hen, throwing off the big black sheet of cotton they had been hiding under. ‘You thcared me!’ said Susie, nervous. ‘I hope thoth ghothth aren’t going to come back.’ Ghosts! Everyone felt a bit jittery so Lou went swiftly on. ‘Beaky, did you remember to bring your grandpa’s old waistcoat?’ Beaky tapped her nose. ‘Of course!’ Grandpa Albert had been very generous in lending the cast all sorts of items: three jackets, a cravat, a 110
walking stick and even the splendid top hat he had worn on the day he had married his beloved Ethel. ‘Happy days! Happy days!’ he said as he handed it over to Beaky. ‘Are you sure grandpa?’ Beaky had thought the tall, silky hat rather too precious to use in the play. ‘Sure? Of course I’m sure! It will be a thrill to see it in action instead of sitting on a high shelf doing nothing at all!’ Under Lou’s guidance everyone tried on their costumes. She measured and pinned and tacked material until all the costumes were to her satisfaction. ‘A few more stitches here and there and we should be finished,’ she mumbled, her mouth full of pins. 111
