penknife, and cut some string tied up round the neck
of a canvas bag. ‘You'll need some spooky green light,
and a bit of blood red, this icy blue and perhaps some
white,’ he added pulling out strange looking plastic
coloured sheets.
‘Sounds great!’ said Sophie not quite sure what
Uncle Max was up to.
At the front of each lamp was a metal bracket. Into
the bracket Uncle Max slotted a sheet of coloured
plastic. ‘These are coloured filters called gels,’ he
explained. ‘Slip a gel into this bracket on the lamp
like this and it gives you a coloured light. These metal
flaps here are called barn doors. They help shape
your beam and cut out 'spill' or light that you don't
want. See how you can flap them open and shut. The
dimmer pack here allows you to alter the power of a
lamp. You can make the light brighter or dimmer. I'll
show you! Go and get King Arthur.’
Sophie and Cressida were surprised by this request
but then Uncle Max was a rather surprising sort of
person. They soon came back with King Arthur and
Uncle Max sat him on a chair where the stage would
be. Outside it was dark.
‘Now pretend Arthur is Jacob Marley about to
appear to Scrooge as a ghost. Quick! Take your seats
for the show!’ said Uncle Max.
