Stage Fright!

The barn was a large, pale yellow stone building
with a slate roof. There was a huge entrance held up
by an ancient timber. Inside were more great black
beams and you could see right up to the roof of one
half. Swallows swooped out in fright when they saw
the children. The floor above was covered in
floorboards to half way along and reached by an old
wooden staircase. Sophie led the way, climbing over
boxes and planks. She climbed up to the floor above
and poked her head through the square gap in the
floorboards where the staircase peeped through. It
was gloomy and dusty. She sneezed before going on.
At last standing on the first floor she realised that
because the floor only covered half of the floor below
you could look down onto the ground floor.
‘The stage could be down there and up here could
be the lighting gallery,’ said Sophie excited. ‘We could
have lights up here and shine them down onto the
stage below. The audience could sit on seats down
there. The perfect theatre!’
‘Perfect!’ said Cressie.
By now all the members were up on the first floor.
‘What's through that prehistoric door?’ asked
Beaky, pointing with her nose.
At the far end of the first floor was an ancient oak
door hung on mighty black hinges.
