‘So am I,’ admitted Lou.<br />
After that everyone was jittery and Beaky was kept<br />
busy prompting nearly every line. Nobody could<br />
remember anything!<br />
‘These ghosts are causing trouble even though they<br />
are only here in spirit!’ said Sophie, which made<br />
everyone laugh, if a little nervously.<br />
At last they got to the final scene. It had been a<br />
messy, chaotic performance.<br />
‘They do say,’ said Cressida as they practised the<br />
bow for a second time, ‘that a bad dress rehearsal<br />
means a good performance!’<br />
‘In that case,’ said Beaky cheering up and tapping<br />
her nose, ‘it should be a wonderful performance!’<br />
The next day in the playground Abby Bagwash, her<br />
hair wild and Bertie sticking out of her shirt pocket,<br />
rushed up to Sophie and Cressida.<br />
‘You'll never guess what,’ she said breathlessly,<br />
‘it's daddy's ladder. It's gone missing again!’<br />
Sophie and Cressida looked at Abby in<br />
amazement.<br />
Abby, who seemed very anxious, went on. ‘And<br />
