‘Horrible girls!’ said Sophie furious. ‘Don't worry Lou,’ said Cressida. 'To be honest I was a bit frightened, but I'm sure we must have imagined it. Let's have another practice tonight and I bet no ghosts will turn up.’ Sophie and Cressida wrote a note to all the members of the DDC. By six o’clock they had all gathered in The Barn Theatre. The house lights were on and Sophie had asked mum if they could have a plate of biscuits and some hot chocolate to make everyone feel happier. Cressida started the meeting. ‘Last night we all got a bit of a fright and now Elsa and Rosalie are trying to scare people and stop them coming to our play by saying The Barn Theatre is haunted. We've got to sort this out. Is anyone frightened now?’ The children looked around the barn. They had already started decorating it for the Christmas performance. Bright tinsel and jolly paper chains 90
hung from the beams. Forty seats were laid out in rows with decorated numbers ready for the audience. There were the props bursting out of the props cupboard. There was a lucky dip barrel in one corner filled with lucky dip prizes. There was the raffle table with a sign saying ‘Raffle Prizes’. There was the refreshments table and a beautifully decorated poster created by Lou. There was their royal patron King Arthur smiling at them looking brave and happy with a festive bunch of holly dangling from his crown. ‘It's more fun than frightening,’ said Susie bravely. ‘Yes,’ nodded Beaky, tapping her nose. ‘There is nothing to be frightened of now.’ ‘I think we must have imagined those ghosts last night,’ added Lou, trying to convince herself. ‘Now we're drinking hot chocolate I think it's the best place in the world!’ said John.
