So the girls wrote a leaflet out ten times each and then set off in wellies and waterproofs and huddling under a giant black umbrella which caught all the gusts of wind and got stuck in bushes and trapped by overhead branches. Despite the wind, rain and troublesome umbrella they posted their leaflets through letterboxes up and down the village. When the girls got back to The Old Farmhouse Sophie beckoned mysteriously to Cressida. ‘I've had an idea for a ghost trap! Come on. We're going to need King Arthur's help!’ The girls dashed across to The Barn Theatre and switched on the house lights. There was King Arthur sitting patiently on the back row. 118
‘If those so called ghosts come tomorrow night and try and ruin our play we'll be ready for them and give them a nasty fright!’ said Sophie. ‘Help me get Arthur upstairs onto the lighting floor.’ With great difficulty the girls carried King Arthur up the rickety staircase and set him down on a chair. ‘Now let's tie this rope around his waist and then throw the other end over that wooden beam up there. Can you catch the other end, Cress?’ ‘Got it!’ ‘Great! I'm just going to get something from the kitchen.’ In a few seconds Sophie was back with a bag of flour and an old white sheet. ‘Could you go over to The Forbidden Door Cress and shut your eyes. Don't open them until I say so.’ Cressida did as her friend asked. After a few minutes Sophie switched off the house lights. ‘Open your eyes now Cress!’ Cressie opened her eyes. To begin with she saw nothing. It was completely dark and silent save the howling of the wind outside and the relentless drumming of the rain on the barn roof. Eventually she became aware of a faint green light growing stronger and out of the gloom she could see a mysterious, ghostly figure. With a terrifying howl the 119
