receive <strong>the</strong>ir sentence, <strong>the</strong>ir brethren <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> faith<br />

l<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> way, and encourag<strong>in</strong>g and comfort<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong>m. They were condemned to die. They went<br />

cheerfully to <strong>the</strong> stake. A voice address<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>m<br />

from <strong>the</strong> crowd was heard, say<strong>in</strong>g, "Joan, behave<br />

valiantly; <strong>the</strong> crown <strong>of</strong> glory is prepared for you."<br />

It was that <strong>of</strong> John Bels, a Carmelite friar. While<br />

<strong>the</strong> executioner was fasten<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>m to <strong>the</strong> stake,<br />

with cha<strong>in</strong>s put round <strong>the</strong>ir necks and feet, <strong>the</strong>y<br />

sang <strong>the</strong> 130th Psalm, "Out <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> depths have I<br />

cried to <strong>the</strong>e, O Lord; " whereupon a Dom<strong>in</strong>ican,<br />

John Campo, cried out, "Now we perceive you are<br />

no Christians, for Christ went weep<strong>in</strong>g to his death;<br />

" to which one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> bystanders immediately made<br />

answer, "That's a lie, you false prophet." The<br />

martyrs were <strong>the</strong>n strangled and scorched, and <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

bodies publicly hung <strong>in</strong> cha<strong>in</strong>s <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> gallows-field.<br />

Their rema<strong>in</strong>s were soon after taken down by <strong>the</strong><br />

Protestants <strong>of</strong> Furness, and buried.[7]<br />

These men, although <strong>in</strong> number amount<strong>in</strong>g to<br />

many thousands, were only <strong>the</strong> first rank <strong>of</strong> that<br />

greater army <strong>of</strong> martyrs which was to come after<br />
