regarded a "General Council," for which <strong>the</strong>y were<br />

bidden to wait, <strong>the</strong> Reformers had had ample<br />

experience, and <strong>the</strong> result had been uniform -- <strong>the</strong><br />

mounta<strong>in</strong> had <strong>in</strong> every case brought forth a mouse.<br />

They were able also by this time to guess, one<br />

should th<strong>in</strong>k, what <strong>the</strong> emperor was likely to do for<br />

<strong>the</strong>m. Almost every year brought with it a new<br />

edict, and <strong>the</strong> space between each several<br />

fulm<strong>in</strong>ation was occupied <strong>in</strong> giv<strong>in</strong>g practical<br />

application to <strong>the</strong>se decrees -- that is, <strong>in</strong> work<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong> axe, <strong>the</strong> halter, <strong>the</strong> stake, and <strong>the</strong> pit.<br />

A new impetus was given about this time to <strong>the</strong><br />

Reform movement, by <strong>the</strong> translation <strong>of</strong> Lu<strong>the</strong>r's<br />

version <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Scriptures <strong>in</strong>to Low Dutch. It was<br />

not well executed; never<strong>the</strong>less, be<strong>in</strong>g read <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

assemblies, <strong>the</strong> book <strong>in</strong>structed and comforted<br />

<strong>the</strong>se young converts. Many <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> priests who had<br />

been <strong>in</strong> <strong>of</strong>fice for years, but who had never read a<br />

s<strong>in</strong>gle l<strong>in</strong>e <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Bible, good-naturedly tak<strong>in</strong>g it for<br />

granted that it amply au<strong>the</strong>nticated all that <strong>the</strong><br />

Church taught, dipped <strong>in</strong>to it, and be<strong>in</strong>g much<br />

astonished at its contents, began to br<strong>in</strong>g both <strong>the</strong>ir<br />
