to fail <strong>the</strong>m. Should <strong>the</strong> destructive cloud roll<br />

hi<strong>the</strong>r, how much will rema<strong>in</strong> a week hence, <strong>the</strong>y<br />

asked <strong>the</strong>mselves, <strong>of</strong> all that <strong>the</strong> wealth and skill<br />

and penitence <strong>of</strong> centuries have ga<strong>the</strong>red <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong><br />

Church <strong>of</strong> Our Lady? It needed not that <strong>the</strong> very<br />

cloud that was devastat<strong>in</strong>g Flanders should<br />

transport itself to <strong>the</strong> banks <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Scheldt; <strong>the</strong><br />

Assumption <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Virg<strong>in</strong>. "Whilst," says Strada,<br />

"her image <strong>in</strong> solemn procession was carried upon<br />

men's shoulders, from <strong>the</strong> great church through <strong>the</strong><br />

streets, some jeer<strong>in</strong>g rascals <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> meaner sort <strong>of</strong><br />

artificers first laughed and hissed at <strong>the</strong> holy<br />

solemnity, <strong>the</strong>n impiously and impudently, with<br />

mimic salutations and reproachful words, mocked<br />

<strong>the</strong> effigies <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Mo<strong>the</strong>r <strong>of</strong> God."[8] The<br />

magistrates <strong>of</strong> Antwerp <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir wisdom hit upon a<br />
