His first care was to raise <strong>the</strong> necessary funds<br />

and soldiers. He could not beg<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> war with a less<br />

sum <strong>in</strong> hand than two hundred thousand flor<strong>in</strong>s.<br />

The cities <strong>of</strong> Antwerp, Haarlem, Amsterdam, and<br />

o<strong>the</strong>rs contributed one-half <strong>of</strong> that sum; <strong>the</strong> refugee<br />

merchants <strong>in</strong> London and elsewhere subscribed<br />

largely. His bro<strong>the</strong>r, Count John <strong>of</strong> Nassau, gave a<br />

considerable sum; and <strong>the</strong> pr<strong>in</strong>ce himself<br />

completed <strong>the</strong> amount needed by <strong>the</strong> sale <strong>of</strong> his<br />

plate, furniture, tapestry, and jewels, which were <strong>of</strong><br />

great value. In this way were <strong>the</strong> funds provided.<br />

For troops <strong>the</strong> chief reliance <strong>of</strong> William was on<br />

<strong>the</strong> Protestant pr<strong>in</strong>ces <strong>of</strong> Germany. He represented<br />

to <strong>the</strong>m <strong>the</strong> danger with which <strong>the</strong>ir own prosperity<br />

and liberties would be menaced, should <strong>the</strong><br />

Ne<strong>the</strong>rlands be occupied by <strong>the</strong> Spaniards, and<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir trade destroyed by <strong>the</strong> foreign occupation <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> sea-board, and <strong>the</strong> conversion <strong>of</strong> its great<br />

commercial cities <strong>in</strong>to camps. The German pr<strong>in</strong>ces<br />

were not <strong>in</strong>sensible to <strong>the</strong>se considerations, and not<br />

only did <strong>the</strong>y advance him sums <strong>of</strong> money <strong>the</strong>y<br />

w<strong>in</strong>ked at his levy<strong>in</strong>g recruits with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir<br />
