Had <strong>the</strong>y succeeded <strong>in</strong> ensnar<strong>in</strong>g William <strong>of</strong><br />

Orange, <strong>the</strong> joy <strong>of</strong> Philip and Alva would have<br />

been unbounded. His sagacity, his strength <strong>of</strong><br />

character, and his <strong>in</strong>fluence with his countrymen,<br />

made his capture <strong>of</strong> more importance to <strong>the</strong> success<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir designs than that <strong>of</strong> all <strong>the</strong> rest <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Flemish nobility. Their mortification, when <strong>the</strong>y<br />

found that he had escaped <strong>the</strong>m, was <strong>the</strong>refore<br />

extreme. His figure rose menac<strong>in</strong>gly before <strong>the</strong>m <strong>in</strong><br />
