<strong>the</strong>se limits once passed, <strong>the</strong>ir determ<strong>in</strong>ation and<br />

ire are <strong>in</strong> proportion to <strong>the</strong>ir former forbearance. As<br />

yet <strong>the</strong>ir submissiveness had not been exhausted;<br />

<strong>the</strong>y permitted <strong>the</strong>ir houses to be entered at<br />

midnight, and <strong>the</strong>mselves dragged from <strong>the</strong>ir beds<br />

and conducted to <strong>the</strong> Inquisition, with <strong>the</strong><br />

meekness <strong>of</strong> a lamb that is be<strong>in</strong>g led to <strong>the</strong><br />

slaughter; or if <strong>the</strong>y opened <strong>the</strong>ir mouths it was<br />

only to s<strong>in</strong>g one <strong>of</strong> Marot's psalms. The familiars<br />

<strong>of</strong> this abhorred tribunal, <strong>the</strong>refore, encountered<br />

hardly any resistance <strong>in</strong> execut<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir dreadful<br />

<strong>of</strong>fice. The nation as yet stood by <strong>in</strong> silence, and<br />

saw <strong>the</strong> agents <strong>of</strong> Granvelle and Philip hew<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir victims <strong>in</strong> pieces with axes, or strangl<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>m<br />

with halters, or drown<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>m <strong>in</strong> ponds, or digg<strong>in</strong>g<br />

graves for <strong>the</strong>ir liv<strong>in</strong>g entombment, and gave no<br />

sign. But all <strong>the</strong> while <strong>the</strong>se cruelties were writ<strong>in</strong>g<br />

on <strong>the</strong> nation's heart, <strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>effaceable characters, an<br />

abhorrence <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Spanish tyrant, and a stern<br />

unconquerable resolve, when <strong>the</strong> hour came, to<br />

throw <strong>of</strong>f his yoke. In <strong>the</strong> crowd <strong>of</strong> those monsters<br />

who were now revell<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> blood and lives <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Ne<strong>the</strong>rlanders, <strong>the</strong>re stands out one<br />
