Protestant and Roman systems, <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> hope that<br />

<strong>the</strong>y might conciliate not a few members <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

latter Church, and lead to peace. The orthodox<br />

party could not see that <strong>the</strong>se benefits would flow<br />

from <strong>the</strong> course <strong>the</strong>ir opponents were pursu<strong>in</strong>g; on<br />

<strong>the</strong> contrary, <strong>the</strong>y believed that <strong>the</strong>y could not stop<br />

where <strong>the</strong>y were -- that <strong>the</strong>ir views touch<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />

fall and <strong>the</strong> power <strong>of</strong> free-will must and would f<strong>in</strong>d<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir logical development <strong>in</strong> a greater divergence<br />

from <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>ology <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Protestant Churches, and<br />

that by remov<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> great boundary-l<strong>in</strong>e between<br />

<strong>the</strong> two <strong>the</strong>ologies, <strong>the</strong>y were open<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> way for<br />

a return to <strong>the</strong> Church <strong>of</strong> Rome; and hence <strong>the</strong><br />

exclanlation <strong>of</strong> Gomarus one day, after listen<strong>in</strong>g to<br />

a statement <strong>of</strong> his views by Arm<strong>in</strong>ius, <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

University <strong>of</strong> Leyden. Ris<strong>in</strong>g up and leav<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />

hall, he uttered <strong>the</strong>se words: "Henceforward we<br />

shall no longer be able to oppose Popery."[7]<br />

Peace was <strong>the</strong> f<strong>in</strong>al goal which <strong>the</strong><br />

Remonstrants sought to reach; but <strong>the</strong> first-fruits <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong>ir labors were schisms and dissensions. The<br />

magistrates, sensible <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>jury <strong>the</strong>y were do<strong>in</strong>g<br />
