One <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> pr<strong>in</strong>ters <strong>of</strong> this first edition <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Dutch<br />

Bible was condemned to death for his pa<strong>in</strong>s, and<br />

died by <strong>the</strong> axe. Soon after this, some one made a<br />

collection <strong>of</strong> certa<strong>in</strong> passages from <strong>the</strong> Scriptures,<br />

and published <strong>the</strong>m under <strong>the</strong> title <strong>of</strong> "The Well <strong>of</strong><br />

Life." The little book, with nei<strong>the</strong>r note nor<br />

comment, conta<strong>in</strong>ed but <strong>the</strong> words <strong>of</strong> Scripture<br />

itself; never<strong>the</strong>less it was very obnoxious to <strong>the</strong><br />

zealous defenders <strong>of</strong> Popery. A "Well <strong>of</strong> Life" to<br />

o<strong>the</strong>rs, it was a Well <strong>of</strong> Death to <strong>the</strong>ir Church and<br />

her rites, and <strong>the</strong>y resolved on stopp<strong>in</strong>g it. A<br />

Franciscan friar <strong>of</strong> Brabant set out on purpose for<br />

Amsterdam, where <strong>the</strong> little book had been pr<strong>in</strong>ted,<br />

and buy<strong>in</strong>g up <strong>the</strong> whole edition, he committed it<br />

to <strong>the</strong> flames. He had only half done his work,<br />

however. The book was pr<strong>in</strong>ted <strong>in</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r towns. The<br />

Well would not be stopped; its water would gush<br />

out; <strong>the</strong> journey and <strong>the</strong> expense which <strong>the</strong> friar<br />

had <strong>in</strong>curred had been <strong>in</strong> va<strong>in</strong>.<br />

We pass over <strong>the</strong> edicts that were occasionally<br />

see<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> light dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> ten follow<strong>in</strong>g years, as<br />

well as <strong>the</strong> Anabaptist op<strong>in</strong>ions and excesses, with<br />
