commander <strong>in</strong>stantly put about and made haste to<br />

return to Antwerp. The surrender <strong>of</strong> Middelburg,<br />

which immediately followed, gave <strong>the</strong> Dutch <strong>the</strong><br />

command <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> whole sea-board <strong>of</strong> Zealand and<br />

Holland.<br />

Success was lack<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> next expedition<br />

<strong>in</strong>vasion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Central Prov<strong>in</strong>ces <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Low<br />

Countries. There would have been no lack <strong>of</strong><br />

recruits had Louis possessed <strong>the</strong> means <strong>of</strong> pay<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong>m; but his f<strong>in</strong>ances were at zero; his bro<strong>the</strong>r's<br />

fortune, as well as his own, was already swallowed<br />

up, and before enlist<strong>in</strong>g a s<strong>in</strong>gle soldier, Louis had<br />
