considerable army from <strong>the</strong> neighbor<strong>in</strong>g Prov<strong>in</strong>ces,<br />

and <strong>the</strong>se were jo<strong>in</strong>ed by veteran troops from Italy<br />

and Spa<strong>in</strong>, which Philip had ordered Alexander<br />

Farnese, Duke <strong>of</strong> Parma, to lead back <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong><br />

Ne<strong>the</strong>rlands The States army amounted to about<br />

10,000; that <strong>of</strong> Spa<strong>in</strong> to 15,000; <strong>the</strong> latter, if<br />

superior <strong>in</strong> numbers, were still more superior <strong>in</strong><br />

discipl<strong>in</strong>e. On jo<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g battle at Gemblours <strong>the</strong> army<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Ne<strong>the</strong>rlands encountered a terrible<br />

overthrow, a result which <strong>the</strong> bulk <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> nation<br />

attributed to <strong>the</strong> cabals and <strong>in</strong>trigues <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Roman<br />

Catholic nobles.<br />

At this stage <strong>the</strong> two great antagonistic<br />

pr<strong>in</strong>ciples which were embodied <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> respective<br />

policies <strong>of</strong> Philip and William, and whose struggles<br />

with one ano<strong>the</strong>r made <strong>the</strong>mselves audible <strong>in</strong> this<br />

clash <strong>of</strong> arms, came aga<strong>in</strong> to <strong>the</strong> front. The world<br />

was anew taught that it was a mortal combat<br />

between Rome and <strong>the</strong> Reformation that was<br />

proceed<strong>in</strong>g on <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>ater <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Ne<strong>the</strong>rlands. The<br />

torrents <strong>of</strong> blood that were be<strong>in</strong>g poured out were<br />

shed not to revive old charters, but to rend <strong>the</strong><br />

cha<strong>in</strong>s from conscience, and to transmit to<br />
