cause <strong>of</strong> humanity and justice. Once and aga<strong>in</strong> and<br />

a third time had <strong>the</strong> Sou<strong>the</strong>rn Ne<strong>the</strong>rlands<br />

manifested this bl<strong>in</strong>dness to <strong>the</strong> mighty perils that<br />

menaced <strong>the</strong>m on <strong>the</strong> side <strong>of</strong> Spa<strong>in</strong>, and rema<strong>in</strong>ed<br />

deaf to <strong>the</strong> call <strong>of</strong> patriotism and religion. When<br />

<strong>the</strong> standards <strong>of</strong> William first approached <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

frontier, <strong>the</strong>y were unable to see <strong>the</strong> door <strong>of</strong> escape<br />

oppose <strong>the</strong> occupation. When <strong>the</strong> cry <strong>of</strong> Naarden,<br />

and Zutphen, and Haarlem was uttered, Antwerp<br />
