<strong>of</strong> Antwerp. These underwent a like speedy and<br />

terrible purgation. Before morn<strong>in</strong>g, not fewer than<br />

thirty churches with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> walls had been sacked.<br />

When <strong>the</strong>re rema<strong>in</strong>ed no more images to be<br />

broken, and no more pictures and crucifixes to be<br />

pulled down, <strong>the</strong> rabble laid <strong>the</strong>ir hands on o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

th<strong>in</strong>gs. They strewed <strong>the</strong> wafers on <strong>the</strong> floor; <strong>the</strong>y<br />

filled <strong>the</strong> chalices with w<strong>in</strong>e, and drank to <strong>the</strong><br />

health <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Beggars; <strong>the</strong>y donned <strong>the</strong> gorgeous<br />

vestments <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> priests, and, break<strong>in</strong>g open <strong>the</strong><br />

cellars, a vigorous tap <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> hammer set <strong>the</strong> red<br />

w<strong>in</strong>e a-flow<strong>in</strong>g. A Carmelite, or bare-looted monk,<br />

who had languished twelve years <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> prison <strong>of</strong><br />

his monastery, received his liberty at <strong>the</strong> hands <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong>se image-breakers. The nunneries were<br />

<strong>in</strong>vaded,[13] and <strong>the</strong> sisters, impelled by fright, or<br />

moved by <strong>the</strong> desire <strong>of</strong> freedom, escaped to <strong>the</strong><br />

houses <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir relatives and friends. Violence was<br />

<strong>of</strong>fered to no one. Unpity<strong>in</strong>g towards dead idols,<br />

<strong>the</strong>se iconoclasts were tender <strong>of</strong> liv<strong>in</strong>g men.<br />

When <strong>the</strong> day broke a body <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> rioters<br />

sallied out at <strong>the</strong> gates, and set to work on <strong>the</strong><br />
