season was now late, and <strong>the</strong> camp<strong>in</strong>g-ground<br />

became a marsh. A yet more terrible disaster<br />

impended over <strong>the</strong>m, provided <strong>the</strong>y rema<strong>in</strong>ed much<br />

longer before Alkmaar, and <strong>of</strong> this <strong>the</strong>y had certa<strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong>formation. The Dutch had agreed to cut <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

dykes, and bury <strong>the</strong> country round Alkmaar, and<br />

<strong>the</strong> Spanish camp with it, at <strong>the</strong> bottom <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

ocean. Already two sluices had been opened, and<br />

<strong>the</strong> waters <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> North Sea, driven by a strong<br />

north-west w<strong>in</strong>d, had rushed <strong>in</strong> and partially<br />

<strong>in</strong>undated <strong>the</strong> land; this was only a beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g: <strong>the</strong><br />

Hollanders had resolved to sacrifice, not only <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

crops, but a vast amount <strong>of</strong> property besides, and<br />

by pierc<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir two great dykes, to br<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> sea<br />

over Toledo and his soldiers. The Spaniards had<br />

found it hard to contend aga<strong>in</strong>st <strong>the</strong> burghers <strong>of</strong><br />

Alkmaar, <strong>the</strong>y would f<strong>in</strong>d it still harder to combat<br />

<strong>the</strong> waves <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> North Sea. Accord<strong>in</strong>gly Don<br />

Frederic de Toledo summoned a council <strong>of</strong> his<br />

<strong>of</strong>ficers, and after a short deliberation it was<br />

resolved to raise <strong>the</strong> siege, <strong>the</strong> council hav<strong>in</strong>g first<br />

voted that it was no disgrace to <strong>the</strong> Spanish army to<br />

retire, see<strong>in</strong>g it was flee<strong>in</strong>g not before man, but<br />
